32. Alternate Avenues for Mentorship With Steven Steiner

If you’re just starting out it can be overwhelming. Help can come from all over the place. However, recently mentor platforms have started to pop up everywhere. But is this “speed dating” form of mentorship helpful?

Don’t become a sponge of chaos!

Lots of junior designers have been rushing to “mentor” platforms over the last couple of years, trying to speak to as many senior designers as they can for feedback from everything to help with job hunting to portfolio reviews.

This has led to many designers receiving conflicting advice with no context… Essentially a senior designer’s opinion that might be right for some people, but may not be applicable to you.

This leads to what Steven describes as junior designers becoming like a sponge of chaos, or receiving so much information that you just aren’t sure what to do with it all.

This week, Steven joins the show to review the many options available for help, and he offers some advice on how to use these mentor platforms to get maximum benefit.

Topics:
• 03:49 – Why do people generally seek out help?
• 07:01 – Where do we go to get help?
• 09:41 – Are “speed dating” platforms beneficial?
• 20:04 – Who is a “mentor” or “coach?”
• 28:09 – Critical Thinking is important for finding mentors
• 29:34 – The difference between a Mentor and a “mentor”
• 31:36 – Mentors can come from anywhere
• 32:31 – The benefits of a Mentor vs Coach
